NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT) on Tuesday activated auto-KYC for issuing mobile connections and converting from prepaid to postpaid and vice-versa via an OTP-based process, as part of reforms aimed at enable a contactless, customer-centric system and secure authentication for mobile subscribers.

As part of the new auto-KYC process, issuing a new mobile connection is done through an online app / portal based process. It offers customers the option to request a mobile connection from their home or office and get home delivery of the SIM card while documents are electronically verified by UIDAI or DigiLocker.

Currently, a subscriber must go through the KYC process which involves a visit to the point of sale with the original identity and address documents as proof to obtain a new mobile connection or the conversion of mobile connection from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa. .

In addition, client consent has been made mandatory in the event that Aadhaar is used and client demographic details are obtained electronically from UIDAI, according to an official press release from the Press Information Office.

“The Aadhaar-based e-KYC process has been reintroduced for issuing new mobile connections. Telecommunications service providers will be charged Rs. 1 / – per client authentication by UIDAI, ”he added.

The cabinet announced on Wednesday a telecommunications relief plan including a change in the definition of disputed Adjusted Gross Income (AGR), a moratorium with four-year interest rates.

It is a fully digital and paperless process in which demographic details along with the customer’s photo are received online by the UIDAI Telecommunications Service Providers (TSPs).

These initiatives are part of the broad telecom sector lightening measures introduced by the Union Cabinet on September 15, which also include streamlining the definition of AGR to exclude non-telecom revenues, deferral of AGR and spectrum fees, among others.
