OL Reign buys goalkeeper Karen Bardsley on loan from Manchester City
The goalkeeper pool has grown for Farid Benstiti and OL Reign. Cosette Morché is no longer Reign’s only goalkeeper under contract after the club announced the acquisition of England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley on loan from Manchester city. His loan will last until June 30, 2021.
Although he is listed internationally for England, Bardsley does not need an international location. She is an American citizen, born in Santa Monica, California. She attended Cal State Fullerton University from 2002 to 2006.
“Karen is a player with a lot of experience. She has played in many important games and knows what it takes to win big games, ”OL head coach Reign Farid Benstiti said in a team statement. “Our goalie situation is complicated this year. We started with Cosette, a young goalkeeper with enormous potential. And now we’re adding Karen, who will be ready to play right away.
After Bardsley’s loan is over, Benstiti says another better keeper will join the club. Rumors have linked current Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi to Tacoma. The team are also expected to sign a third goalkeeper.
“We have already signed another goalkeeper who will join mid-season, and when Karen leaves in June we will have another top player to replace her,” said Benstiti. “It’s complicated, but very good. It makes me happy to have so many great goalkeepers with us this season – some younger, some more experienced – all of them will make a big contribution to our project.
Bardsley has been with Manchester City since 2013 and has racked up over 100 appearances in all competitions. While there, she won the league once in 2016 and the England Cup thrice.
“I’m really excited to be joining OL Reign during this time and very grateful to Man City for allowing me to experience a new environment to get more playing time and progress in my learning and development,” Bardsley said. . “I was very impressed with the overall approach and attitude of everyone at OL Reign and I look forward to seeing the team and the coaches again.
“[The] NWSL is such a competitive league, and I’m determined to do whatever I can to help the club get the season off to a good start.
Bardsley is a member of the England Women’s National Team, with 81 appearances so far for the Lionesses. She has participated in three FIFA women’s tournaments world Cup lineups and two UEFA Euro lineups. Bardsley also represented Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics. After winning their group, Great Britain crashed in the quarterfinals against Canada.
Bardsley recently took over from Ellie Roebuck at Manchester City. Roebuck was recently called up to the English camp with Bardsley not on the list.
