Saga: Cruiseship ‘Spirit of Discovery’ in countdown to launch first cruise in Great Britain
Spirit of Discovery was originally launched on July 10, 2019, so it only recently took to the waves when Covid-19 locked down the country. Her first sailing with the restrictions lifted will see her leave Tilbury on Sunday June 27 for a six-night cruise in the Highlands and Scottish Isles. He will then complete two six-night itineraries between the Northern Islands and the Fjords * on July 3 and 25 respectively, and in the meantime, a Great British Isles Adventure cruise starting July 11 for 14 nights.
Nigel Blanks, CEO of Saga Cruises, said: “We look forward to welcoming guests to Spirit of Discovery on June 27 as we set off around the British Isles. We know how eager they have been to get on board and our crew members are delighted to provide them with an incredible cruising experience. We’ve all waited so long to sail again, and we want to make this as special as possible for everyone.
When at full capacity, the Spirit of Discovery will be able to accommodate 999 guests in 554 cabins, although that number is still capped for these early cruises to meet Covid protocols.
At this point, the 540 crew members will join the ship in the coming days. Many are returning crew members so regular guests will recognize the friendly faces.
Once on board, the crew will once again familiarize themselves with the ship and its roles and undergo extensive training in the Covid protocol before guests arrive on board. The ship will also undertake a number of sea trials, which will allow the crew to train and refine key elements such as breakfast, lunch and dinner, theatrical performances, the routine of daily cleaning and replenishment in ports.
And they’ll need to be well trained, as it takes nearly five days to load the ship with all the supplies needed on its first cruise around the British Isles. During a normal stopover, the resupply of the vessel takes around 10 hours as food, drinks and supplies are brought on board.
While docked for the past year, the maintenance team also took the time to invest in other upgrades, including the installation of handwashing stations at the entrance to all restaurants.
The Spirit of Discovery and its all-new sister ship, the Spirit of Adventure, which will depart on its inaugural cruise on July 26, are both small by today’s ship standards, but cleverly designed and the number limited. of guests combine to give a real feeling of space. and the comfort of the guests.
Designed with a modern, contemporary look with an understated sophisticated palate and every carefully thought-out design element, Spirit of Discovery offers a plethora of ways for guests to spend their cruise. There are five restaurants including The Grand Dining Room, The Grill, Coast to Coast (seafood specialty), East to West (Asian fusion), and The Club by Jools (steakhouse), all of which are complimentary for dining.
The salon offers coffee, snacks and full bar service, and the South Cape Bar is the ship’s main bar. Outdoor facilities include an observation deck, full boardwalk and deck, swimming pool, sports court, and deck games. Entertainment and wellness facilities include The Playhouse (a 444-seat theater with full unobstructed views, home to Saga Cruise’s resident entertainment company), the Britannia Lounge with a dance floor and shows, the Library with refreshments, craft and card rooms Le Spa with hydrotherapy pool, sauna, hammam and treatment rooms, Le Salon, gym, boutique and medical center.
Art lovers will also be delighted as specially commissioned works of art from UK and UK artists and design studios that take inspiration from the geography, landscapes and palette of the British Isles can be found around the ship.
